Proposed bans on advertising and distribution of lottery tickets are inadequate

This is the opinion that our economist Nikola Filipov shared in the "Business Daily" program on TV "Europe":

"It is not adequate to introduce changes to the laws in this way, from one day to the next without any economic argumentation. This simply sends a very negative signal to economic counterparties... lottery tickets in particular are a very heavily regulated sector of the economy. Their systems are entirely related to the National Revenue Agency. The Gambling Commission exercises extremely heavy control over them... This lack of any economic argumentation raises, at least for me, a lot of doubts about the true motives behind this bill."

"It is not rational when you have regulated a sector of the economy so heavily, when you have no evidence of any violations, to change the legal framework. This is extremely negative and, in my opinion, will invariably lead to a decrease in investments in the country."

His interlocutor Nikolay Oblakov from "Misal" countered by saying that the case is much more ethical than economic and that no economic justification should be sought for the proposed legal amendments. In response, Filipov added:

"The purely moral aspect of things - I am firmly against state interference in such principles. Morality, culture, these are concepts that are formed at the family level. It is not the function of some bureaucrat to tell us what is good to do and what is not. After all, we are rational people, I think everyone can decide for themselves what to do. The biggest problem with this whole thing is that it allows the state to make decisions instead of the consumer."
