We are witnessing a political consensus whose consequences and philosophical basis are completely ignored and excluded from the public conversation.
Politicians from literally all major powers are talking openly about how they will transfer key elements of the country's sovereignty to one or more supranational institutions, gathered under the umbrella of the European Union.
The leader of the list of the largest party in our country wants a legislative initiative of the EP and more intervention of MEPs in the social sphere, we have all heard about the European minimum wage, a common army, the euro is not even mentioned (there the consensus was reached "unanimously"), common "food standards", etc. The introduction of new regulations and directives, which is happening on a permanent basis and at the moment, is not in focus at all - it is perceived as an automatic process. Although, in the UK it was one of the main reasons for supporting Brexit.
Even those who present themselves as "Eurosceptics" (or "reformists", because they don't even have the courage to be skeptics) show some form of resistance only to a set of cultural interventions of the EU. They have completely betrayed the front when it comes to the key structural instruments through which sovereignty is transferred to the Paris-Berlin-Brussels axis. They themselves have left-wing ideas in economics, which they want to push through the common institutions without shame. Moreover, resistance on cultural issues is only where one has already been created naturally within their electorate - they simply have no choice but to follow it.
The superficial (oilcloth, as I call it) patriotism imposed through the educational system of the socialist regime of the 1980s is crystal clear in public life and conversation. Traditional costumes are worn, revolutionaries are venerated as secular saints, wreaths are laid, odes for independence and poems about the struggle against foreign political power are recited.
These same people put on a suit and tie and start saying "yes" to the abolition of the Bulgarian lev (backed by an extremely stable monetary mechanism - the currency board), "yes" to the introduction of the euro (an unstable construct that has led to crises and placed us under foreign rule and discretion), "yes" to more power in Brussels, "yes" to a common political future, "yes" to rules invented elsewhere and imposed on us, "yes" to European bureaucrats making decisions for Bulgarian citizens.
Perhaps at the next holiday they celebrate demonstratively, politicians should be asked: In what way is the Brussels Empire better than the Ottoman Empire...and than Independence?
The naive hope of the smart-beautiful movement that the angels of the European Union would descend upon us and deal with corruption and oriental managerial customs hung in the air. On the contrary, the collapse of the rule of law over the past ten years has also occurred as a result of laudatory monitoring reports, supported by fat “cohesion” financial incentives.
And no, there is no excuse - we don't know or "we'll see, let's try". All key figures and institutions of the EU are looking absolutely openly in one direction - the creation of a super-state and the loss of independence for the member states. Macron's "Mobility" package is a trailer for the common political future that we so expect. Leaving the Union, as Britain has shown us, is an almost impossible process - even for a country like the United Kingdom.
What is left for a country where the political and intellectual class is bought with 30 billion euros and nice Brussels posts?
Europe is making a grand historical mistake. Our elite is so rotten that it will make us one of the first victims of this mistake.
