Private initiative in China

Perhaps Deng's most important move was decollectivization. The process freed up the labor force—those left outside the "iron rice bowl" system—without work and income. They were the free resource that private initiative in the country needed.

Property rights and the environment

Since there is no social optimum and any decision about common resources will be the result of political pressure (such as the protests) or parliamentary servility to certain special interests (such as the changes in the law), we can conclude that public ownership of resources has a fundamental problem.

The future of nuclear power in Japan

The Fukushima accident last year has raised questions about the safety of nuclear reactors around the world. Understandably, opposition to nuclear power has been strongest in Japan since the accident, where the dangers inherent in nuclear power plants have become apparent.
