26.10 - The State Academy of Music becomes an independent institution

On October 26, 1954, the State Academy of Music was transformed into an independent educational institution. At the same time, it was renamed the Bulgarian State Conservatory. It changed its name several times - in 1995 it was renamed the State Academy of Music "Prof. Pancho Vladigerov" after the famous Bulgarian composer Pancho Vladigerov, and since 2006 - the National Academy of Music "Prof. Pancho Vladigerov".

The State Academy of Music was founded in 1921. The National Academy of Music is the only higher education institution in Bulgaria that includes the entire spectrum of music-theoretical and performing specialties for training professional musicians.

Professional music training in Bulgaria began to develop at the beginning of the 20th century, when the first music school was actually established in Sofia. This work is associated with Ivan Shishmanov, the Minister of Education at the time. When approving the school's regulations, it was decided that it would be private, but would be subsidized by the state and would be under the direct control of the Ministry.

The Music School over time became one of the centers of musical culture in Bulgaria. In 1921, it became a secondary department of the newly opened Music Academy. The National Music Academy "Prof. Pancho Vladigerov" from its establishment to the present day has made a huge contribution to the development of musical culture and the international prestige of Bulgarian musical art.
