Pre-election warning for betrayers (Eurosceptics)

The upcoming European elections will have an important role in the direction of pan-continental development in the coming years, although our, Bulgarian, results are not particularly significant. The avalanche-like downward slide of Eurofederalization may be temporarily diverted or at least delayed as a consequence of the May vote in Germany and France. The point is that the great Eurosceptic goal in our country does not pass through elections. On the contrary, its implementation may even depend on not giving votes to supposedly skeptical politicians.

Let me walk you through the logic. Let's say I'm a voter who is worried about the growing power of Brussels, the taking away of native independence, the EU-subsidized import of people or ideologies foreign to me, the stifling regulation and bureaucracy, the economic effects of joining the Eurozone, the strengthening of the oligarchy with EU funds, or anything else like that. In short, I don't want any more of this "Europe."

I think to myself, what can I do about this, except, of course, to share my concerns in the modern agora of social networks. Ah, I can vote, so that I can show the Eurocrats how it's done. I look at the options on the table and see that things are quite limited in terms of possibilities – the only list with some (although not very likely, since Tsvetan Vassilev doesn't pay) chance of entering the EP with skeptical messages is that of VMRO, led by Angel Dzhambazki. I go through the online tests just in case – they confirm that we have a match and I'm ready. The plan is in place, the vote will be for VMRO.

Unfortunately, this is a plan with a guaranteed zero result and the reasons for this are twofold – context and human nature. The context is crystal clear. VMRO is a party, a member of the ruling majority with representation in parliament, ministerial and coalition councils. All places where, to put it mildly, it can “influence” the governance and direction of Bulgaria. One such key opportunity for “influence” was, for example, last summer, when the government abruptly decided to turn towards membership in the Eurozone (from its previous, rather sensible, wait-and-see position).

It requires no explanation as to why opposing the Euro should be an insurmountable, iron-clad position for anyone who claims to be a Eurosceptic. Let's leave aside the economic arguments against it, but how can a group of "voivodes" and "nationalists" agree with the abolition of the Bulgarian lev, the subordination of the BNB and the giving of more power to foreign politicians and officials to dispose of domestic affairs? Moreover, the Euro is just a step, followed by a common treasury, tax equalization and a falling domino of transferring more and more sovereignty to the Berlin-Paris-Brussels axis. It is incomparable how much more important it is to preserve the lev and the currency board than to possibly, perhaps, take a supposedly Eurosceptic MP to Strasbourg for a resort.

In this context of power and the threat of loss of sovereignty, have you heard our brave defenders of Bulgarian independence from the VMRO protest, campaign, leave the government, resign? Any reaction at all against their entry into the Eurozone? Not that the things they react to make the situation better for their voters... We heard countless statements against Islamic immigration, but as soon as the Agency for Bulgarians Abroad came under voivode control, we suddenly naturalized Kosovars and Albanians in exchange for a few euros in party assets. But still, at least something?

Here comes human nature, we get to the point that as long as those representing a community – in this case, Eurosceptic voters – are not subject to punishment and control by that same community, they lose all accountability. And this is normal, the dog jumps according to the stick, if the elected representatives of the Eurosceptics can scold for the Eurozone, then they will continue to do so. After all, the real boss has said to go in. As long as it is enough for voters to watch only cosplay to go and vote properly, they will only get cosplay.

I am not claiming that this behavior is a huge surprise or that my analysis is a discovery. It is not as if I noticed only last week that, for example, “nationalist” (or perhaps now “conservative”) politicians are sorting out their personal housing issues while they are foaming at the mouth at the mouth of the gypsy. But we have reached a situation where a broad coalition is needed to avert the economic threat of the euro and the even greater political threat of Eurofederalization. How will this happen when you, (we) Eurosceptics, are content with mouse-sucking and cosplaying? How can you expect “Jambazina to beat the bad guys” in the EP when his ruling party is bending the knee in vassalage to the most important battle – the euro.

To paraphrase PJ O'Rourke, I would say - Don't vote, you only encourage the bastards. Don't vote for people who, being in power, refuse to implement their declared principles. With your vote, you demonstrate to them that sweet talk is important, and what is done is irrelevant. Levski seems to be remembered only as long as you post him on Facebook, then we forget that "actions are needed, not words."

And things are easy here. You stand like a Macedonian Chetnik in front of the government and say: "Leva, which Boteva and countless heroes carried on their heads and fell for freedom, I will not give for a government position. This is my resignation, Mr. Prime Minister."

A little skin in the game at least, out of shame. And history will recognize its national traitors, sooner or later.
